Karangahake Gorge

At the southern end of the Coromandel range, before the land rises again to the Kaihau Ranges, this historic gorge is a sharply winding canyon and the main link between the Waikato region and the Bay of Plenty. Renowned for its gold mining past, the gorge has historic cycle paths & walkways, like the 'Windows Walk', named for the 'windows' in the cliff face at the end of mining tunnels, giving access to tunnels & relics from the mining & railway eras. Some of the mines are home to glowworms and cave weta.
