Napier

Updated: Dec 10, 2023

Napier is renowned as a major centre of New Zealand wine, housing the oldest wineries in the country. In 1931 the city was razed by a massive earthquake & in the following two years was almost completely rebuilt in the prevailing architectural styles - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco. So now it is best known for being one of the most perfectly preserved Art Deco towns in the world. Maori motifs were employed which gave the town a uniquely distinctive NZ character. A walk (solo or guided) around the centre is immensely rewarding to those interested in period architecture. Every February, Napier celebrates it's heritage with the Art Deco weekend - a stylish celebration of all things 1930's, including vintage cars, fashion and music.
