The largest city in the South Island, third in New Zealand behind Auckland & Wellington, Christchurch lies on the east coast, just north of the Banks Peninsula. Devastated by an earthquake in 2011, it is now largely rebuilt having bounced back energetically with innovative new attractions as well as old favourites. Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island.
